FAQ

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ is a self-defense system that is built upon a healthy lifestyle. The key focus is BJJ is the idea of getting to a safe position, without using punching or kicking this is an ideal system for a Police Officer, college student, or junior adult to practice to keep safe and fit, and not have to worry about the moral and legal ramifications of self-defense.

Do I need to be in shape for this?

We are firm believers that you “do not need to be in shape to get in shape.” Everyone has his or her own starting point, and the hardest part is getting started. The Introductory Lesson is used to determine your foundation and from there we can start a progressive plan to keep you training.

Do I have to compete?

No, your biggest competition is yourself. Those who wish to may, but it is never a requirement.

Am I too old to get started?

No, everyone can benefit from better fitness and self-defense. The classes are designed so adults train with adults, and children train with children. We will not have an adult work with a junior in class.

Do I have to have  some martial arts experience?

It is welcomed, but not required. The school is designed with tiers of training, both Basic Fundamental Training and Advanced Training. All beginners go through the fundamentals, before being invited to the Advanced Training Program. It is invitational only, you are not forced into a more strenuous class nor can you buy your way in either.

I don’t care about self defense I just want to lose weight can this really help?

We hear this all the time. In experience of teaching hundreds of different students, we have one response.

You can go to the gym and get fit, but typically you’re alone and if you don’t know what you are doing you may get hurt. When you train in an Academy with like-minded partners there is always a support system to push you that extra step. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a cardio intensive, bodyweight lifting exercise routine, and while we don’t make you stand in front of a mirror lifting a heavy bar, by learning how to defend yourself, the fitness and confidence come as a great side effect!

Are there classes for my child or children?

There are three age groups at Park Slope Academy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Little Grapplers ages (8-12)

Junior Grapplers ages (12-16)

Adult Grapplers ages (17- 107)

Do you offer family, military/first responder discounts?

Yes, please let your Program Director know when you are starting your training.

What is the tuition for classes?

After your first Introductory Lesson, you will sit down with a program director and go over the classes, schedule, and even the uniforms. Tuition depends on you, how you want to take care of it, what you want to put down. The classes work on any budget.
