FAQ

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a self-defense system that is built upon a healthy lifestyle. The key focus is BJJ is the idea of getting to a safe position, without using punching or kicking.

Do I need to be in shape for this?

There is absolutely no experience or fitness background required for starting Jiu-Jitsu with us. We at PSABJJ are firm believers that you do not need to be in shape, to get in shape. Everyone has his or her own starting point, and we all know the hardest part is getting started. Our Introductory Lesson is used to determine your foundation, and from there we can start a progressive plan to keep you training.

Do I have to compete?

No. Those who wish to may, but it is never a requirement to train at PSABJJ.

Am I too old to get started?

No. No matter the age, young or old, everyone can benefit from better fitness and self-defense. The classes are designed so adults train with adults, and children train with children.

Do I need to have martial arts experience?

It is welcomed, but certainly not required. The school is designed with tiers of training, both Basic / Fundamental and Advanced Training. All beginners go through the Fundamentals class before being invited to the Advanced Program. It is invitational and optional, you are not forced into a more strenuous class nor can you buy your way in either.

I don't care about self defense, I just want to lose weight. Can this really help?

We hear this all the time and we have one response.

You can go to a gym and work out to get fit, but typically you are alone. And there is a risk that if you don't know what you are doing, you may get hurt. When you train at PSABJJ, with like-minded partners, there is always a support system to push you that extra step. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a cardio intensive, bodyweight lifting exercise routine, and while we don't make you stand in front of a mirror lifting a heavy bar, by learning how to defend yourself, the fitness and confidence come as a great side effect!

Are there classes for my child or children?

There are three age groups at Park Slope Academy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

  • Little Grapplers ages (5-10)

  • Junior Grapplers ages (10-15)

  • Adult Grapplers ages (17+)
